Friday Note! Dear Parents,
For Language Arts this week, we participated in activities that revolved around Halloween stories. The stories that we read were: The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, by Linda Williams, The Vanishing Pumpkin, by Tony Johnston, and Inside a House That is Haunted, by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. Miss Meyers combined the story about the little old lady with some neat hands-on activities. The students were each given an item from the story (pants, a hat, gloves, a shirt, or shoes) and at the appropriate points in the story, they got to help her retell it by using these items. Then they created their own fun scarecrows with pumpkin heads just like the one in the story, and filled out a story review that focused on sequencing. They had a lot of fun with this! On Thursday, we read about the vanishing pumpkin, and the kids went on a scavenger hunt in different groups. They had to hunt for clues and decide where the clues hinted to go next. At the end, the clues led them back to the room, where pumpkin pie and apple cider were waiting for them! A big thanks to Mrs. N. and Mrs. L. for helping with this activity! We all enjoyed the haunted house story, which involved a lot of repetition. The kids quickly memorized the different parts and helped me read the story. They worked on some haunted house math grids to go along with this. The class also worked on their Halloween packets both this week and last. The packet included math, reading, and writing skills, as well as some fun art pages. Your child will be bringing this home to show you today. They worked on this as they finished other work, so it is okay if every page is not completed. (This would be great extra practice at home!) Our “Spooky Spelling Words” went very well! All of the children earned pieces of candy! Some other books that we enjoyed this week were Skeleton Hiccups, by Margery Cuyler, (There was a very silly audio tape that went along with this! The kids cracked up when they listened to it!) and We’re Going On a Ghost Hunt, by Marcia Vaughan. Some seasonal movies that we watched the past two weeks are “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” “Scooby Doo and the Boo Brothers,” and “Mickey’s House of Villains.” Look for new spelling and vocab. words, and the Take Home book, “Just One More.” In the kids’ Friday folders today is a counting packet that we worked on each day to count down to the Halloween parade day. We did two poems a day to finish this on time, starting with 1 and ending at 10. In other Math news, we are working hard on counting combinations of pennies and nickels and knowing when to exchange them. We also continue to look at a variety of patterns. We are finding that patterns are everywhere! We continue to look at frames and arrows; they are becoming more challenging! Now we often have a number in the middle of the boxes, but not at the beginning. We have to look at the rule to decide which numbers come before and after. The class had an awesome field trip to the zoo on Monday! It was chilly, but we bundled up and were amazed at how active the animals were as a result of the cooler weather. Some of them were eating or playing with pumpkins…and the rats were actually sleeping inside one that was hollowed out! Everything was decorated for Halloween which made it extra fun and a little spooky. The carousel ride was a highlight for many of the students. After touring the zoo and filling out a habitats worksheet, we had time to play in the park before heading back to school. A HUGE thank you to all of the parents who came to help out: Mrs. N, Mrs. R, Mrs. L, Mrs. B, Mrs. Br, Mrs. Bu, Mrs. H, and Mrs. W. I hope you enjoyed it as much as the kids did! Can you believe tomorrow is November??? 1H has plenty to look forward to as we begin learning all about our first Social Studies hero, Squanto, and how he helped the pilgrims. We will be performing a play for you right before Thanksgiving break…look for more info. on this soon! I can’t wait to start transforming out room with lots of turkeys!
Sincerely, Mrs. Hobson and Miss Meyers
