Great Dewey Adventure

Welcome to the Great Dewey Adventure!  By the time you complete this adventure you will know a number of things about Melvil Dewey and the Dewey Decimal Classification System.  As you will learn a lot of libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System so you will be on your way to using the library more easily.   

Ready?  Let's get started.  All you need to do is choose the links to follow and answer some questions to test your new skills.

Lesson 1:  In this lesson you will learn about Melvil Dewey and the purpose of the Dewey Decimal System.  By the end of the lesson you should be able to state some biographical information about Dewey and state the purpose of the Dewey Decimal System.

Lesson 2:  In this lesson you will learn to identify a Dewey Decimal number and place Dewey Decimal numbers in order.  By the end of the lesson you will be able to identify a Dewey Decimal number and place in order Dewey Decimal numbers to at least the second digit after the decimal.

Lesson 3:  In this lesson you will learn more about the classification scheme.  By the end of the lesson you will be able to state the number of classes and name the broad descriptions for these classes.  You will also be able to identify what a subdivision is both by sight and definition.
