1. Culture Grams
Culture Grams is available on-line. This is the best resource for providing quick basic information on a country. Each Culture Gram includes information on the following:
· Map
· Land and Climate
· History
· Population
· Language
· Religion
· General Attitudes
· Personal Appearance
· Greetings
· Gestures
· Visiting
· Eating
· Family
· Dating and Marriage
· Diet
· Recreation
· The Arts
· Holidays
· Commerce
· Government
· Economy
· Transportation and Communications
· Education
· Health
· Events and Trends
Even though all this information is available it is brief and works best as a way to familiarize yourself with a new country.
Print version of Culture Grams may also be available in your IMC. Currently we do not subscribe to this as the online version is more up-to-date and also includes a photo gallery of images representing daily life, five recipes for each country, famous people biographies, maps, flags, and national anthems.
2. Encyclopedia of food and culture (3 vols)
This is an example of a specialized encyclopedia of which many different types exist. However each encyclopedia will have several things in common. First each will have articles arranged in alphabetical order that can easily be found be using the Index. Second each will have said index in the last volume of the set.
Have a volunteer use the index to look up information about South Korea and/or Korea. In this case we have more entries under Korea. Note: this is the reason we use an index.
3. Holiday Dictionary
Many different dictionaries are in existence. They have several things in common. All entries are listed in alphabetical order and most have appendices to help in finding information. The example I have is Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary edited by Henderson and Thompson.
Have a volunteer look-up legal holidays by country which the table of contents says begins on page 699. Note: in this instance that the entry is Korea, South (page 706). The numbers behind each holiday indicate the number of the dictionary entry where more information can be found. The Dewey number for holidays—folklore is 390’s.
4. Cookbooks
Cookbooks are found under the subject heading Cookery and in the Dewey 640’s. I have two examples of multicultural cookbooks to help find 5 dishes and 2 recipes. Remember that when looking at general books that they too usually have several things in common. First they usually have a table of contents and/or an index to help you find the information you are searching for. Secondly most books have chapters to help you figure out where you are inside the book.
In looking at the Multicultural cook book for students we find that there are 2 recipes along with a description of some other food stuff eaten in Korea.
In looking at the Foodlover’s atlas of the world we find that while there are no specific recipes there is a list of signature dishes. With this list and other information available in the article on Korea, we can now look in other cookbooks or online for recipes.
5. Etiquette books are a wonderful place to look for information on meal customs as well as things such as eating and utensils. The example book, Multicultural manners, has an entire chapter called foodways to provide insight into what to do with food.
6. Country facts can also be found in books specifically about that country. I have pulled an example on South Korea from the series, Modern Nations of the World. Again as with general knowledge books we are going to look at the table of contents and index for help in locating the specific information we desire. In this case we still need to find information on food economy.
7. Online information can be located using a basic search engine such as Google or it can be accessed through hotlinks or pathfinders. Connect now to the pathfinder developed for this assignment. (If no internet this part maybe skipped or explained through print copy of the pathfinder. The pathfinder has been developed to help walk the students through some searches as well as a reminder of the print sources available).
