Language Arts

"Language arts" is a term which encompasses several different areas of study.  It includes reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar and spelling.  In fourth grade your child will be exposed to many different genres (types) of stories through our Harcourt Series, "Trophies."  We will cover a different story every week with related skills.  Each week we will focus on a different grammar skill and spelling pattern.  There are also a targeted set of vocabulary words that accompany each story.  Your child will be tested (almost) every Friday on the skills taught during the week as well as on the content of the story.
We will also have a spelling test every week... there will be a pre-test on Monday and a post-test on Friday.  Students who miss 0-2 words on the pre-test, will take a challenge list of words.  In addition, they will also be responsible for studying the words they missed on the pre-test.
Fourth graders spend a lot of time writing!  We write narratives, expository pieces, and even try a bit of persuasive writing.  I put a lot of emphasis on proper use of capitalization and punctuation.
