When you are doing a report on anything, and you use information that someone else has found, or if you use another person's words, you need to tell everyone else where that information came from. Pretending that you came up with the information yourself is against the law and is called plagiarism. As you get older, you will learn very specific ways to cite information. In fourth grade, I just need you to get in the habit of reporting your sources. (A source is any person or place that gives you information.) Here's how I want you to cite (tell me) your source: |
||
| If you get something off of the internet... | On an index card write the http:www...address that you went to online. DO NOT just tell me that you went to "Google." | |
| If you read your information from a book... | On an index card write down the title of the book, the author, and the illustrator (if there is one). | |
| If you interviewed someone... | On an index card write down, "Personal interview with _______________ on _________(give the date.) | |
| If you used an Encyclopedia... | On an index card write down the title of the series and the volume you used. | |
| If you visited a historical or informational site... | On an index card write down the location the place you visited and the date you were there. | |
| If you get your information from a newspaper or magazine article... | On an index card write down the title of the publication and the date it was issued. | |
