Weekly Newsletter:
November 30th, 2009
I hope your
families had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and are excited for the upcoming
festivities.
In Language
Arts this week, we will be reading an informational text:
From Seed to Plant.
This text will actually be a great review for the students from our
previous science unit on plant life!
The phonics and spelling skill for the week is dealing with the following
consonant blends: spr, str, and thr.
Our grammar skill for the week will continue our study of proper nouns.
This week we will be focusing on the names of the months.
I feel this is a continual review for the students because of our daily
work with our morning calendar routine.
I have seen such a positive difference in their comprehension of nouns
and proper nouns from the beginning of the year!
Our writing skill of the week will be a good challenge for the kids.
It focuses on being able to stay on topic in your writing and to include
topic sentences when writing paragraphs.
Finally, our comprehension skill will focus on being able to read
diagrams. This is a very important
learning skill for the students to understand in the area of science and social
studies.
This week
in math we will be starting chapter 5!
This is a very exciting chapter that focuses on line plots, parallel
lines, and shapes. I find that the
geometry chapter is always one of the students’ favorites because of all of the
hands on activities we complete while studying the concepts!
This week
in science we have begun our study of dinosaurs!
The students have been anxiously awaiting this chapter, and it is finally
here! While we study these concepts
we will be discussing the topics of fossils and the three different time periods
that take place during the dinosaur age:
Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.
I hope you
have a wonderful week!
