Illinois
Early
Learning Standards
The Illinois
Early Learning Standards (for children ages 3-5) were first
developed by the Illinois State Board of Education with the
assistance of hundreds of educators, and were first
introduced in draft form in June 2000.
The
standards are organized to parallel in content the Illinois Learning
Standards for K-12 education. Included are benchmarks for learning
in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical
Development and Health, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, and
Social/Emotional Development.
The
Illinois early learning standards are integrated into our daily routine
and lessons. For a complete list of the learning standards, please
visit
www.isbe.net/earlychi/default.htm.
The learning
standards are based on the following principles:
-
Early learning and development are multidimensional.
-
Developmental domains are highly interrelated.
-
Young children are capable and competent.
-
Children will exhibit a range of skills and competencies
in any domain of development.
-
Knowledge of how children grow and develop, together
with expectations that are consistent with growth
patterns, are essential to develop, implement, and
maximize the benefits of educational experiences for
children.
-
Young children learn through active exploration of their
environment in child-initiated and teacher-selected
activities.
-
Families are the primary caregivers and educators of
young children.
