In 1809, the Illinois territory was made up of present-day Illinois, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Kaskaskia was the capital of the territory. When Illinois became the 21^st state in 1818, it had the same boundaries as today, and Kaskaskia was still the capital. Shadrach Bond was the first governor of Illinois.
