What is a SLP?
A SLP works with a full range of communication and its disorders, SLPs:

Evaluate and diagnose speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders.

Treat speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to elderly

When does a teacher or parent refer?
When he/she notices any of the speech or language concerns listed under "Speech-Language Disorders."
Although do remember the following: Some speech/language delays are typical depending on the age, cultural background or particularities of the child.
