April News from 4 F/R

This year has just been flying by!  We have survived ISAT testing!  It was a crazy couple of weeks, but the students did a great job of concentrating and following our mixed up schedules.  It is also so nice to see all the children return from spring break. We are all glad to be back to normal routine.

In math, we are working on long division. There are still some students that need to practice the multiplication & division facts.  After completing division, we will begin a unit on fractions. These facts will also be important when we work with fractions.

We will be reading some wonderful stories in our reading book that go along with our new unit in social studies.  In writer’s workshop, the students have a chance to write their own stories for awhile.  We will also work on an expository essay, and possibly by the end of the month we will begin a unit on poetry.

Starting on April 7th, we will begin an all school reading incentive program.  It is called, “Track Down a Good Book”.  We are asking that all students read each night for four weeks.  The fourth graders are expected to read 20 minutes each school day.  The students that make our fourth grade goal of 360 minutes will be able to attend a field trip to the Normal Theater on May 16th to watch a surprise movie. Your child should also have another letter and calendar with more details.

In social studies, we are studying the Southwest region. When we finish this unit at the end of next week, we will begin our final region; the West. In science, they will begin studying electricity and magnetism.  Your student will learn about series and parallel circuits.
