Retention/Promotion Review Process:

The following procedures will be used for each child, when the building principal identifies that child for retention/promotion review.

First: A folder containing examples of student work and teacher comments about the student's academic performance related to adopted District curriculum expectations will be prepared for parent and principal review. This folder may be created as early as the first grading period but not later than the first week of the final grading period. The purpose of this folder is to focus attention on the student's achievement and effort related to adopted District curriculum standards. Teachers may include work collected throughout the year and are encouraged to be concise with connects.

Second: The principal will include other pertinent information in the folder, e.g.

attendance data, standardized testing data, copies of progress reports, report cards or other correspondence about the student's academic performance. Anecdotal records from parent conferences or actual parent correspondence items may be included as well. It is imp2rtant to note that parents or legal guardians must be informed about the fact that their child is being considered for retention Parents or legal guardians must be given the opportunity to discuss and comment on this issue with the principal prior to the final placement decision. The parents also should be involved in discussions of additional academic supports; however, the decision to retain or promote a student is the principal's and must be made based on the student's academic performance or on the likelihood of that student's academic success in the future with appropriate academic support .

Third: If the principal makes a decision for retention or promotion which is different than the recommendations that may have been made by the student's teacher, the teacher must be informed that such a decision has been made and a printed explanation of that decision must be placed in the student's temporary folder. If the teacher makes no specific recommendation, there is no obligation to inform the teacher about the retention/promotion decision Parents or legal guardians who disagree with a student's final placement

decision may appeal that decision to the Superintendent or the Superintendent's designee. The Superintendent or designee will initial any change from the principal's placement decision and will inform the principal in question about that change. The Superintendent's decision will be final.
