Establishing School / Parent / Community Networks To
Promote Student Success
Based on a survey of Unit 5 parents, students, staff members,
and administrators; an analysis of LUDA (Large Unit District
Association) school districts; and research on effective written
and educational websites, develop recommendations for the Unit 5
Board of Education which identify:
Current written communication devices determined to be effective
and ineffective in informing parents and the
community.Suggestions for how the community (parents and others)
can maximize use of our web page resources.How to communicate
what students need to know before coming to middle or senior
high school.Potential resources available to assist in
development of a design plan to increase communication.This
study topic addresses our district goals of improved
communication and family involvement.

Establishing a School Community of Assessment Literacy
Based on a review of current research on best practices in
assessment, develop recommendations for the Unit 5 Board of
Education which identify:
Key stakeholders in the assessment process and the assessment
information needed by each.Whether our current practices promote
student involved learning and reflect current brain-related
research as to best practices in testing.Potential needs for
staff development related to what constitutes quality assessment
practices.Long- and short-term measures of success we currently
use and how we communicate them.This study topic addresses our
district goal of student achievement.

Creating Early Childhood Learning Opportunities
Based on continued research and comparisons of models for
pre-kindergarten programs, develop recommendations for the Unit
5 Board of Education which outline:
Current educational philosophies for programming for early
childhood learners.
· Suggestions for parent involvement in designing and
implementing activities to foster early learning.Program models
of grouping students for maximum benefits from school and
community resources.Availability of classrooms and potential
costs of programming.This study topic addresses our district
goals of student achievement, communication and family
involvement.

Planning for Middle School Transitioning
Based on continued research from the 2001 CAC report on Sixth
Grade in Middle School, develop recommendations for the Unit 5
Board of Education which outline:
Recommendations for potential activities to prepare current
fifth grade students for their move to the middle school as
sixth graders.Recommendations for potential activities to help
parents be partners in the transitioning process.Prioritized
considerations regarding how the 16 grade schools might be split
into the 3 middle schools.This study topic addresses our
district goals of student achievement, communication and family
involvement.

Providing Opportunities for the Advanced Secondary School
Learner
Through an analysis of existing programs and research on program
options for accelerated learning opportunities implemented in
other LUDA and high school districts and a survey of recent
graduates attending a variety of designated universities,
develop recommendations for the Unit 5 Board of Education which
identify:
A synopsis of current Unit 5 Honors, Advanced Placement or
other advanced courses and proposed courses.Suggestions for
compiling and sharing potential resources that could benefit the
advanced secondary learner (websites, catalogue, etc.) with all
counselors.A summary of research findings on available programs
(such as the International Baccalaureate program) and
partnerships found in other areas similar to ours nationally.A
prioritized list of suggested additions for enhancement of our
current programs and potential resources for implementing them
(i.e., alternative learning times-summers /
evenings).Feasibility of establishing exchanges with existing
programs in the Bloomington / Normal area (i.e., opening up the
opportunity for high school students to study at a community
college and / or other institutions of higher learning including
ISU; internet classes, etc.).This study topic addresses our
district goal of student achievement.
