Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do I apply for a certified employment with Unit 5?
    • The best way to apply is to complete the on-line application. You may also mail your resume with cover letter indicating the position of interest to our unit office, attention HR Department. Also, feel free to stop by the unit office to pick up an application.
  • Will all my experience be counted? Do you hire people with as much experience as I have?
    • Credit will be granted at the rate of one year for each of the 1st 5 years, and one year for each two years for the next six years. The highest a person can enter the system is at step nine.
  • What is a credential file?
    • A credentials file is typically held by a university and contains letters of recommendation prepared by instructors and previous employers. Letters of recommendation can be submitted in place of a credentials file.
  • Will you respond to my application and/or interview?
    • If selected for an interview, applicants will be notified by phone of the time and date. If an applicant is not selected for an interview, the application will be retained for two years for any future positions. Once an applicant has been interviewed he or she will be notified by phone if chosen to fill the position and by mail, if not.
  • How can I best prepare for an interview and/or job with Unit 5?
    • Make sure that your file in the Unit Office best represents you and your teaching philosophy and contains all requested information. Since interviews are typically brief, be prepared with concise, well thought out responses.
  • Should I send in my application all at once or as I gatherthe separate components?
    • Complete the application and submit as soon as possible. Send pertinent information to the Unit Office, as soon as it becomes available
  • How long will you keep my application?
    • Two years.
  • What basic benefits can I expect?

  • How will I know what teaching positions are available?
    • Positions are posted on the website, at all school buildings, at the Unit Office and on the job boards of many Midwestern universities.
  • Do I need to apply more than once for a position at Unit 5?
    • You only need to apply once, but to keep your application active; you may send a letter of interest, respond to posted positions and/or update application and/or resume.
