Keeping Up to Date

May, 2008

Only one month left and your children will officially graduate from Carlock School!
Where did the years go?

The month of May will be very busy. The fifth graders are busy working on their Civil War projects in class. They've finished 2 of the 4 projects in a timely fashion. We should have the other 2 completed by next week and then we'll be ready for the Carlock slave escape using the Carlock Underground Railroad. Weather permitting, we will also have a "battle" between the North and the South on the football field and the playground. I will let you know the dates as soon as the plans are finalized.

On Monday, the 5th, we will have the pleasure of having State Representative Keith Sommer visit our class in the afternoon. He will be talking to the students about government issues. He will also visit the 3d and 4th grades.

On Monday, the 19th, the patrol members will be treated to a pizza party after school. Information on that went home on the 1st, so if you haven't seen it, ask your child. The party will last until 4:15 and transportation home will be necessary.

Tuesday, the 20th, fifth graders will be accompanying the 2nd graders (their book buddies) on their field trip to Glen Oak Zoo.  We will eat lunch at the park and return by 2:00. All students will need to bring a sack lunch that day. Please do not pack lunches in coolers.  More information will be sent home soon.

Wednesday, the 21th, we will be having a pizza party for lunch (thanks to the room moms) and playing the games student groups created a few weeks ago.

Friday, the 23th, is the BIG DAY for our field trip to Chicago. We will leave Carlock School on the bus at 6:30 a.m., so I would like everyone here by 6:15 so we have time to load. Our first stop will be Cantigny Museum in Wheaton. Our tour lasts from 9:30-12:00. We will eat sack lunches on the grounds and then travel to Brookfield Zoo. We will be at the zoo until 5:00, which is closing time. From there we travel to Portilla's in Shorewood to eat dinner. They specialize in hot dogs, hamburgers, and Italian beef.  I'm allowing about an hour to order and eat and then it's back home to Carlock. We should be arriving here between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. If your child does not have an adult accompanying him/her, we can call you when we have a clear arrival time so you can pick your child up.

Tuesday, the 27th is the end-of-the-year video and 5th grade recognition. I encourage all fifth graders to attend because we will be wearing our special t-shirts along with receiving certificates.

The final week of school we will packing up the room because everything has to be out for remodeling. Be sure to stop by the room next year because the 5th grade room will have a completely new look. The rest of the rooms will be remodeled the following year.

Friday, the 30th, is the last day and students will be here for an hour to receive their report cards and sign yearbooks.

Have a wonderful summer. I will miss this year's class. They've been a lot of fun and are very interested in learning. I feel they will adjust to the junior high in no time because their feet are on the ground. They have the skills and the knowledge to do well.

     Keep in touch.
