Word Fun
Here are some activities that your child might enjoy at home:
***A list of high frequency words for kindergarten are included on our class website/curriculum.
1. Enjoy a book, poem or song!
2. Use Abc pasta or Alphabits cereal to make familiar words.
3. Go on a word hunt in your home. Write down words and make your own dictionary. If you include pictures with the words you can make a
picture dictionary.
4. Make your own Bingo game or Concentration game using our sight words.
5. Use a marker to highlight sight words that are in the newspaper headlines.
6. Use shaving cream on a tray or cookie sheet. Write and spell the sight words in the shaving cream. Then just for fun. . . blow up a balloon and draw a face with a marker. Spread shaving cream on the balloon for a beard. Use a popsicle stick to 'shave' the beard! This activity is fun to do outdoors. Use a wading pool to rinse the balloon face again and again!
7. Play school with your child but allow them to be the teacher!
8. Enjoy a family puzzle or game night!
9. As you enjoy stories at home, look on each page for different kinds of punctuation.
Ten Ways to Become a Good Reader

Remind your child that 'good readers' do not know all of the words. . . they try 'tricks' or strategies to help them figure out the words that they do not know! (Look at the word and try the letter sounds; read on in the sentence; look at picture clues; try a word that makes sense in the sentence; if the word is long, look at word parts or syllables.)
