 SONGS AND POEMS

***These are some of the poems that we enjoy each week in our song and poetry notebooks!    We hope that you enjoy reading them with your child each week when they bring their folders home!

"Richer than I. . . you can never be  . .for I had parents who read to me! "

                                                                         2010

                   A new year,

                   A new year,

Now we have a new year,

                   2010 will be great!

                   Let's come to school and

                   celebrate!

                                                                     I Only Got One Valentine

                                                                    By Jack Prelutsky

                                                        I only got one valentine,

And that was signed. . .

                                                                    Love, Frankenstein

                     Butterfly Ballad

(Tune:   Have you ever seen a lassie?)

Have you ever seen an egg, an egg, an egg?

Have you ever seen an egg, stuck to a leaf?

Have you ever seen a caterpillar, caterpillar,

caterpillar?

Have you ever seen a caterpillar chew a hole in

a leaf?

Have you ever seen a chrysalis, a chrysalis,

a chrysalis?

Have you ever seen a chrysalis spin around with its silk?

Have you ever seen a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly?

Have you ever seen a butterfly . . .fly away now?

                                 Northpoint Knight

Northpoint Knight,                       Northpoint Knight,

Northpoint Knight,                      Northpoint Knight,

Standing so tall,                           Shining so bright,

Guarding the hall!                       Do you sleep at night?

                    Northpoint Knight,

                    Northpoint Knight,

                    When I walk by,

                    Will you say "Hi"?

                    Summer Is Done

                                    Don't look back. . .

                                    Summer is done. . .

                                   It's time for school. . .

                                  And lots of fun!

My Shot

I have to get a shot today,

Though I'd really rather not.

But if I don't I could get sick

I could get sick a lot!

I know that shots are good for me,

I mean they're better than they seem,

But I wish they'd put the medicine

In candy or ice cream!

Maybe someday I'll get to meet

Whoever invented the shot.

I think I'll walk right up and say,

"Thank you, thanks a lot!"

I know that shots are good for me,

I mean they're better than they seem,

But I wish they'd put the medicine

In candy or ice cream!

   Gingerbread Man

Oh where, oh where is the Gingerbread Man?

Oh where, oh where can he be?

Is he North, or South, or East, or West?

Oh where, oh where can he be?

(Flashlight activity:  Dim the lights.   Use a flashlight to point to North, South, East, and West in the room.  Sing the G-Man song and shine the flashlight in the different directions.   Variation:  If you have a large map, talk about where to find the directions.   Shine the light on the map as you sing the song.)

                                                            Labor Day

Mama Bear works and brings home money.

Papa bear works and brings home honey.

So once a year

We celebrate

How hard they work

By sleeping late.

The Tickle Rhyme

                     by Ian Serraillier

"Who's that tickling my back?"   said the wall.

     "Me!" said a small caterpillar.

     "I'm learning to crawl!"

(We talked about the quotations in this poem.)

                                           Traffic Light

     Red is at the top

     And it means stop!

     Yellow means wait,

      Even if you're late!

      Green is down below

      And it means go!

          Kindergarten Here We Come!

     (Tune:   Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)

Kindergarten here we come!

We know we'll have lots of fun.

Lots of things to make and do,

Reading, writing, counting too.

Kindergarten here we come!

We know we'll have lots of fun!

  Parents

An apple for the teacher,

It's really nothing new,

Except when you remember,

That parents are teachers too!

What did your parents teach you?    '08

-how to play football

-how to play the piano

-how to be good and how to play soccer

-how to go trick-or-treating

-how to watch cartoons

-how to ride in the grass with my 2 wheeler

-how to learn about animals

-how to be good

-how to do math problems, read a Spiderman book, ride a 2 wheeler,

play whiffle ball, and soccer

-how to stay away from monsters

-how to tie my shoes (I'm still practicing.)

-how to balance on a 2 wheel bike

-how to count to 6 and how to ride a bike without training wheels

-how to play kickball and whiffleball

-how to ride a big bike without training wheels

-how to love them

-how to take care of dogs

-how to take care of my cats

-how to ride my bike

-how to color

-how to tie my shoes and how to read

-how to count to 100

-how to do math

-how to tie my shoes

My Hands

My hands can clap

Just like this!

My hands can help me

Blow a kiss!

My hands can touch my toes

Down low,

My hands can wave

Good-bye and hello!

Echo. . .echo. . .echo

Did you ever ever ever

Hear an echo echo echo

When you talk talk talk

In the gym gym gym

Where the walls walls walls

Seem to bounce bounce bounce

All your words words words

Back to you you you?

The words words words

Seem to fly fly fly

Round the room room room

And they come come come

Back to you you you

Like a ball ball ball

Making hoops hoops hoops

In your ears ears ears.

It's funny funny funny

That you hear hear hear

Every word word word

That you said said said

While you're saying saying saying

Something else else else

And your mind mind mind

Thinks wow wow wow wow wow!

Zero the Hero. . .Math Superhero

Zero the Hero comes to school,

Zero the Hero knows the rule,

See the smile upon his face,

He helps numbers hold their place!

Zero the Hero is done with school!

Zero the Hero is going to the pool!

See the smile upon his face. . .

He thinks kindergarten was a fun place!

Matter Man

Matter Man is our Science Super Hero!    He helps us learn about solids, liquids, and gases!

Matter Man, Matter Man . . . changes matter whenever he can!

Ice is a solid.   It has a shape!

But when it melts, it's all over the place!

Matter Man, Matter Man. . .changes matter whenever he can!

He blows up a balloon.   There's air inside!

Air is a gas.   But where does it hide?

Matter Man, Matter Man. . . changes matter whenever he can!

Popsicles melt. . .drip, drip, drip!

They become a liquid. . .sip, sip, sip!

Matter Man, Matter Man. . .changes matter whenever he can!

As we studied matter, we helped Matter Man earn his shields for solids, liquids, and gases!

The Planet Rap

                              Mercury's 1st,  it's closest to the sun,

Venus is 2nd,  but too hot for fun!

                              Earth is next, it's # 3,

With water and plants for you and me!

Mars is 4th,  we can't forget it!

It is known as the great red planet.

Jupiter's 5th with its great red spot.

Saturn has rings of ice and rock!

Uranus has rings and it shines blue!

Neptune is 8th, but we're not through!

The very last planet far away from the sun,

Is cold, cold Pluto, and now we're done!

Martin Luther King Jr.

(Tune:   Whole World in Our Hands)

We've got Martin Luther King in our hearts,

We've got Martin Luther King in our hearts,

We've got Martin Luther King in our hearts,

He had a dream for the whole wide world!

Quote:  " You have the power for greatness! "  Martin Luther King Jr.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Money Song

Money, money, money, I always like money,

Money, money,  money, to buy things at the store,

A penny's worth 1 cent, a nickel's worth 5, a dime is worth 10 cents, a quarter 25!

Money, money, money, I always like money.

Money, money, money, to buy things at the store.

Lincoln's on 1 cent, Jefferson's on 5, Roosevelt's on 10 cents, Washington's on 25!

Money, money, money, I always like money.

Money, money, money to buy things at the store.

A building's on 1 cent, a building's on 5, a torch is on 10 cents, an eagle on 25!

Money, money, money I always like money,

Money, money, money to buy things at the store!

Use this song about money to help your child compare and practice with coins.

Gray Squirrel

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,

Swish your bushy tail,

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,

Swish your bushy tail,

Wrinkle up your funny nose,

Put a nut between your toes,

Gray squirrel, gray squirrel,

Swish your bushy tail!

                     Apple Basket

   (Tune:  Mulberry Bush)

Round and round the apples go,

Where they stop, no one knows!

Pick an apple and look underneath

A-P-P-L-E !

                     Red, White, and Blue

             (Tune:  Happy Birthday to You)

                   Oh, red, white, and blue,

                       We honor you!

You have red and white stripes,

                       And 50 stars too!

                                 Hug O' War

                            by Shel Silverstein

I will not play at tug o' war.

I'd rather play at hug o' war,

Where everyone hugs,

Instead of tugs,

Where everyone giggles

And rolls on the rug,

Where everyone kisses,

And everyone grins,

And everyone cuddles,

And everyone wins!
