Multiplying by 2

Multiply by 2 ~ count by 2!  Multiplying by two is an easy way to get started with multiplication.    

If you are having trouble with the twos, think about things that come in pairs ~ shoes, socks, mittens, or gloves.  Look at the picture below:

Mrs. Dawson found five pairs of mittens after school.  How many mittens does Mrs. Dawson have?

The multiplication problem would be 2 x 5 = 10

The picture shows five pairs of mittens, for a total of 10 mittens

 

Practice multiplying by 2.  Remember that multiplying by 2 is the same as doing a doubles fact in addition.  So 2 x 6 is the same as 6 + 6.
