Multiplying by 9

The nines are a favorite to most third graders.  There are many tricks to learn to remember the nines facts.  Click below to find out about those tricks. 

The Fingers Trick      It all adds up to 9

When you multiply by nine, think of a tic-tac-toe board!  Look at the picture below:

Each tic-tac-toe board has nine squares.  If there are two games of tic-tac-toe being played, how many squares will there be? 

The multiplication problem would be 9 x 2 = 18

The picture shows nines squares per board,  boards altogether, for a total of 18 squares
