Multiplying by 4

Multiplying by 4 is like doubling a number twice.  When you take 2 x 4, you are simply doing 2 x 2 twice.   

Remember, whenever you multiply by 4, the answer will always be an even number! Look at the array below:

There are six Christmas trees.  Each tree has four red ornaments on it.  How many red ornaments are there in all?

The multiplication problem would be 4 x 6 = 24

The array shows seven trees with four red ornaments, for a total of 24 red ornaments

 

Practice multiplying by 4.  Remember that multiplying by 4 is the same as doing a doubles fact twice in addition.  So 4 x 6 is the same as 6 + 6 = 12, so 12 + 12 = 24.
