Multiplying by 5

Practicing the five facts is as easy as telling time!  Every number on the clock represents that FIVE MINUTES have gone by.  So if you know how to tell time, that will help you with your fives.

When you look at the clock numbers, multiply that number times five and the answer will be the same as the number of minutes that have gone by in an hour.  Look at the clock below:

The minute hand is on the 6.  In time, that means that it is 30 MINUTES past the hour.  For multiplication, you can remember 6 x 5 = 30, just like 30 minutes past the hour.

The multiplication problem would be 6 x 5 = 30

The clock shows the time to be 9:30, and you can practice 6 x 5 = 30

Practice multiplying by 5.  Remember that multiplying by 5 is the same as looking at the numbers on a clock to see how many minutes have gone by.
