Assignment Notebook

Every day your child will be bringing home his/her Assignment Notebook.  We will spend time at the end of each day writing that night's homework in the assignment notebook.  Please take time to read the entries in the notebook, check to see if your child has completed his/her homework, and sign that day's page in the assignment notebook.  Please help reinforce this responsibility at home by having your child ask you to sign the notebook.  It is their responsibility, not yours, to get it signed.  There is a place for you to write notes if you have any questions or concerns.  Please feel free to use that, we do check the students’ assignment notebooks on a daily basis. The assignment notebook should be brought back to school each day.

Take Home Folder

Every night your child will be bringing home his/her Take-Home folder.  We will spend time at the end of the day filling the folder with the papers necessary to do that night’s homework, and notes that need to be sent home. On the left side of the folder is homework that needs to be completed and brought back to school. On the right side of the folder are notes or graded papers that need to be taken out each night.  Please go over the papers and homework with your child each night. Your child should bring the Take-Home Folder back the next day.

Reading Minutes

Every month your child will be required to read a certain number of minutes each month and record them.  We will gradually increase the number of minutes throughout the school year.  The number of minutes required for each month will be written at the top of the recording sheet. The recording sheet will be found in the red reading folder.  It should be returned the last day of each month with a parent signature.  It is helpful if you add up the minutes for the month. Students will be rewarded peanuts (our classroom money) as a reward as well as a Pizza Hut Book It slip for a personal pizza for meeting their goal each month.

Book Sharing

As part of their reading responsibility, your child will be required to read one book from an assigned genre (fiction, non-fiction, biography, historical fiction, etc.)  and complete a book sharing project each month. The genre will be listed at the top of the reading minute recording sheet for the month.  Please note that the book chosen for the book sharing can count towards their monthly reading minutes. Only the book chosen for the book sharing must be the assigned genre; the rest of the books read for reading minutes can be student choice. Once your child has read a book from the assigned genre, they will need to complete a project from the list provided in the red folder.  Projects should be completed at home and brought back to school the last day of each month, provided it is a school day.  Students will be presenting the projects for the class. See the rubric provided in the red folder for grading guidelines.

*Book Sharings and Reading Minutes will not start until September.*

Spelling

Lists come home on Friday and tests will be given on Thursday.    A pretest will be given on Friday for the next week.  Our original list consists of 15 words.  If your child correctly spells all words  on the pretest, he/she will not be tested on the regular list.  He/She will be given a list of “extra tough” words. He/She will be tested on only the extra tough words.  Students who miss words on the pre-test are still welcome to take the extra tough test, but they will still have to take the regular test as well.  We encourage your child to start studying early for the test.  It is too much to wait until Wednesday and then have to learn all of the words.

Daily Language Review (D.L.R.) and Daily Math (D.M.)

We will practice these two things everyday in class, and quizzes will be given every Friday.  The quizzes contain the same skills and content reviewed throughout the week.
