  CROSS-COUNTRY

This sport involves running a distance of 1.9 – 2.1 miles for middles schools over many different types of terrain. We may encounter grass, hills, creeks, roads - almost anything.

A team is made-up of at least seven runners with the top five scoring for the meet.

  PARTICIPATION

Every cross-country meet is a little different depending on the host school and the size of the meet. The coach will inform the runners of the exact set up of the meet at the practice prior to the meet.

  SMALLER MEETS
Some smaller meets will just run every competitor together and then score the top 5 men and top 5 women for the team results. Every runner will receive a place and time.

  LARGE INVITATIONALS
Some larger invitationals will run more than one race. They will have a Varsity race and a Junior Varsity (JV) race. The top 7 runners from the boys and girls team will run in the Varsity race. Other competitors will    compete in the open race.  The members of the varsity team can vary from meet to meet.

SCORING

Cross-country is both an individual and a team sport. The race will produce an individual winner; this runner will score 1 point for his or her team.  Each runner thereafter will receive a place.  The individual places of the first five runners from each school are used to determine the team score.  The team with the lowest point total wins.  Every runner after the fifth runner on the team is important in order to bump the points of the other team(s) higher.  The team that wins the meet depends on the entire squad.
