The Internet is full of millions of
sites maintained by millions of people, companies, and organizations, and
it can often be difficult to sort through the vast amount of information
out there and to find what you need for your assignments. Chiddix
IMC suggests using the following tactics (in the following order) to find
relevant information.
1. Curriculum Hotlists: When
a class visits the IMC to do research for an assignment or project, Mrs.
Glatt often searches for and chooses sites that contain excellent
information. She creates a web page called a hotlist on the Chiddix
website so students may easily access these great sites. The Curriculum
Hotlists page serves as an index to all of the hotlists.
2. Online Services: Unit
5 and Chiddix pay for a number of online services that provide reliable,
relevant, and current information to students and staff. Following
is a list of online services and their descriptions. Some of these
services may be accessed from home. Please see IMC staff or the Info
TKO brochure for passwords.
EBSCO
Middle Search Plus: Provides
full text for over 100 magazines covering general topics appropriate for
middle and jr. high school students. Click "EBSCOhost
Web" and choose this database from the list.
EBSCO Animals:
Provides
in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals and
describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals. Click "EBSCOhost
Web" and choose this database from the list.
EBSCO
History Reference Center: A wonderful collection of
historical information. Sources include outstanding history
reference books and encyclopedias, historical documents, biographies
magazines articles, images and historical maps. Click "EBSCOhost
Web" and choose this database from the list.
Bigchalk
eLibrary: In-depth database of information featuring major
articles from magazines, books, newspapers, pictures, maps, and television
and radio transcripts.
World
Book Online: General
encyclopedia including the complete text and pictures of the
print version, with added charts, maps, and
more
3. Search Engines and
Directories: If you need
additional information, you can then conduct a search using a search
engine after you ask for permission from your teacher or IMC staff.
FYI: Mrs. Glatt's favorites are Google
and Yahoo!
4. Website Evaluation: Students who find sites
using search engines and directories are strongly encouraged to
evaluate them thoroughly before relying on them for information.
Students can use the Website
Evaluation Guide to help in this process.
