Course Description
The vision of family and consumer sciences education is to empower individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society. Our unique focus is the interrelationship between work and family. The 8th grade FCS course goal is to provide consumer and relationship information and strategies to make informed decisions that improve the quality of individual and family life.
Becoming an Informed Textile Consumer:
* Use science-based experiments to understand fiber characteristics
* Practice laundry procedures at home
* Discriminate quality products from manipulative advertising
Clothing Construction and Repair Skills:
* Basic operation of sewing machine
* Six basic skills will be taught to complete sewing projects from paper designs to
personalized beginner projects.
Demonstrating Workplace Skills Required for Textile Production:
*Apply learned skills to make a more advanced construction project
*Learn to read and interpret technical directions
Interpersonal Relationships:
*How to effectively communicate with adults
* Demonstrate an appreciation for being a part of a family
* Use critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse
family, community and work environments.
