John C. Chiddix Junior High School is located in Normal, Illinois,
approximately midway between Chicago and St. Louis, Missouri, on Interstate
55. There are three junior high schools in the Unit 5 school system. CJHS has
a current enrollment of approximately 825 students in grades six, seven and
eight. The student population is racially and economically diverse.
Chiddix has adopted a middle school concept, which teams all students. The
teams consist of two to four core teachers. The core teachers are
responsible for language arts, reading, mathematics, science, and social
studies. Since each team shares its core teachers and scheduled class periods,
it is possible for the teams to integrate curriculum, plan special events, and
manipulate the schedule to suit the needs of the team. The middle school
concept addresses the needs of adolescents by bridging the gap between single
teacher classrooms in elementary school and the varied group of independent
teachers in high school.
Seventh and eighth student take physical education, health and a practical
arts rotation, which includes art, family and consumer science, technology,
and applied communication. Students may elect to participate in music, chorus,
or band. Students may also elect to begin study in one of three foreign languages:
French, German, or Spanish. The instructional school day is approximately 7
hours in length, which includes a 30-minute lunch.
Sixth grade students are all enrolled in reading, language arts, math,
science, and social studies. Along with daily physical education
and health, sixth graders also participate in a practical arts rotation that
includes a semester in foreign language, nine weeks of computer keyboarding,
and nine weeks of art. In the area of music, students may elect band or
strings. Students not in band or strings participate in general
music.
