"Egg-plosion"
Blow out the contents of an egg: make a small hole on top and bottom of egg and blow.
Allow egg to dry overnight.
Generate hydrogen gas (H2) using set-up shown.
I use 35 g of mossy zinc (Zn) with 50 mL muriatic acid (HCl) added to 200 mL tap water.
Acid that is too concentrated will generate hydrogen gas too rapidly.
Allow the hydrogen gas to expel any air in the egg for about 1 minute (as shown in photo).
You will see vapors leaving the top of the egg.
Hold your finger over the top of the egg and continue to fill the egg with hydrogen for 90 seconds.
Set the egg on top of a 50 mL beaker and light a match to ignite the hydrogen gas on top of egg.
If your quiet, you will hear a faint "pop" as the hydrogen gas is lit. Wait patiently and after about 30 seconds, the egg will explode violently.
As the hydrogen burns, it
sucks in oxygen from the bottom of the egg - when the lowest combustible
ratio of hydrogen and oxygen are obtained -
-the egg explodes.
CAUTION: Wear safety glasses and ear protection if you have sensitive hearing.
