Advanced Chemistry – Semester Exam Topics (Fall 2002)     Mr. Christopherson

This is a list of key words that were covered this semester for each unit of study we covered.  You should be familiar with all terms and be prepared to answer questions relating to these terms.  The final exam is in the form of multiple choice and short answer.  Feel free to look up info @ www.unit5.org/christjs

Matter

alloy, heterogenous, homogeneous, liquid, matter, chemical change, gas, chemical properties, solution, physical change, solid, compound, physical properties, element, density

Chemical Foundations:  Elements, Atoms, and Ions

anion, cation, proton, neutron, ion, mass number, atomic number, isotopes, nucleus, electron, compound, models of the atom

Chemical Quantities

stoichiometry. percent yield, actual yield, excess reactant, theoretical yield, limiting reactant, coefficients, subscripts, superscripts, mole calculations

1 mole = MM = 6.02 x 1023 = 22.4 L @ STP

Modern Atomic Theory

ionization energy, core electrons (kernel electrons), valence electrons, Pauli Exclusion Principle, orbital, ground state, excited state, photon, frequency, wavelength, filling order, trends in the Periodic Table, electron configuration(s)

Organic Chemistry

Alkanes, Alkenes Alkynes, functional groups, nomenclature, reactions (esterification, addition, etc...)  This unit will have the fewest questions on it – as I already tested you on this topic.

Radioactivity and Nuclear Energy

critical mass, chain reaction, fission, fusion, radiotracers, half-life, geiger counter, nuclear transformation, positron, gamma ray, beta particle, alpha particle, radioactive, nucleons.  Essay topics?

The test will be an author made exam.  The questions are from a 1st year chemistry course.  The test will take you about 2 hours.  You may bring in a sheet of paper with anything you want written on it as a cheat sheet and a calculator.  I will provide a periodic table.
