Thermit Reaction

An impressive chemical reaction:  Fe2O3  +  2 Al  -->  2 Fe  +  Al2O3

Rust and aluminum are combined and ignited with a magnesium ribbon.  Molten iron is produced and lots of energy is released.

This demonstration produces heat at above 3000 oF.

Concepts:  Single Replacement Reaction, Exothermic, Re-dox

Time Required:  15 minutes

Chemicals Provided  Iron (III) oxide (rust), powdered aluminum.
