Thermit Reaction

An impressive chemical reaction:  Fe₂O₃  +  2 Al  -->  2 Fe  +  Al₂O₃ 

Rust and aluminum are combined and ignited with a magnesium ribbon.  Molten iron is produced and lots of energy is released.  

This demonstration produces heat at above 3000 ^oF.

Chemicals Provided  Iron (III) oxide (rust), powdered aluminum.
