ATTENDANCE EXCEPTION PROCEDURES
Individual school boundaries have been established for all Unit 5 Schools based on the residence of the parent or guardian. The following procedure has been established to address the issues of attending a school other
than the one assigned.
|
IMPORTANT
For K-5 students, exceptions will be granted based on the enrollment numbers at the requested and the assigned schools.
Receiving an attendance exception is a privilege, not a
right.
For Junior High (6-8) and Senior High School (9-12)
students, exceptions will be granted only for documented health or psychological problems. In order for a student attending high school on an attendance exception basis to participate in any Illinois High School Association (IHSA) sponsored activities, the student must be declared eligible by that organization.
|
Procedure
Any attendance exception request must be made in writing to the:
Assistant Superintendent of Elementary or Secondary Schools
McLean County Unit District 5
1809 W. Hovey Avenue
Normal, IL 61761
The attendance exception request must include the following
(Please
see attached form):
-
Name and grade of each child for whom the request is being made
-
Present address (this must be permanent and primary residence; not an owned/leased home or apartment which is not the parent’s primary residence)
-
Phone numbers (home and work, if applicable)
-
School to which child’s geographic address is currently assigned
-
School being requested by parent/guardian for attendance exception assignment
-
Reason(s) for making the request (please be specific)
-
For Secondary Requests ONLY: Documentation of physician or psychological clinician of chronic health or psychological need for environmental change.
-
Upon receipt, the request will be dated and recorded in the Superintendent’s Office.
-
Initial
elementary requests may be submitted after January
1st, and will be considered after May 1. Subsequent requests may not be considered until after enrollment numbers are known following the August registration.
-
Secondary requests will be considered within a reasonable response time after receipt. Principals will be consulted in deliberation of resolution.
-
Parents will be notified in writing of final resolution.
Parents and guardians are responsible for transporting to and from school any child who is attending on an attendance exception basis.
Bus transportation will not be provided to any student attending a school on an attendance exception basis. SPECIAL
NOTES: Elementary exceptions, when granted, are for ONE year
only. A written request must be made each subsequent year if a continuation of the exception is desired. Once an exception has been granted,
there is no guarantee that it will continue to be granted in subsequent
years. Secondary
exceptions, when granted, are permanent.
